MR16 Led Lamps – Making Enormous Strides in Led Technology

What do consumers really look for in a light bulb? How about LEDs? What makes one LED better than the next? LEDs slow rise to fame has met many of the consumer's desired criteria including:

  • the best in energy efficiency
  • long life
  • low heat
  • good lumen output
  • wide temperature range
  • full dimming capabilities
  • excellent color
  • no delay when the light first turns on
  • capable of being an adequate focus light
  • low to moderate cost to resell and manufacture

Although most halogen, fluorescent, incandescent and other lamps do not meet this criteria. In fact, LED lamps have been the closest to meet the overall desirably of what the consumers expect in a lamp (light bulb). Recent higher than normal expectations on a light bulbs performance has placed LED manufacturers and designers at a constant state or improvement. Top design troubles with LEDs include:

  • low lumen density per point
  • forcing engineers to use multiple point sources to create an efficient directional LED lamp
  • multiple sources tend to create shadows, in some cases creating an undesirable lighting application

Recent developments of GaN on GaN technology has led to outstanding breakthroughs in LED lighting and energy density, allowing 5 -10 times more lumens to generated per unit volume.  Why does this matter? This will primarily benefit the smaller LED arrays, allowing for a reduction in size of the directional lamps, better results in the point source-like behavior, greater heat tolerance and a more compact lumen package.

"Lighting affects the way we see the world, and good light can make anything more compelling," says co-founder Shuji Nakamura. "At Soraa, we are proud to create efficient lighting products that do not compromise on performance, offer the highest quality available and greatly reduce energy waste."
